Please wash your Gi and shower yourself! Its common courtesy to yourself and those around you. Getting ringworm, staph/MRSA or any other disgusting bacteria is not fun. Beside the potential serious health affects having open festering wounds on your body is just plain gross. If you have a family, girlfriend or any sort of normal human interaction you now have to be cognizant of your skin issue and potential to transmit it to others. Recently I contracted ringworm, and this time around the bacteria/ringworm condition is worse then I have experienced in the past. Every time I’ve gotten ringworm (approx. 3 or 4 times) I immediately blame my jiu-jitsu gym. It is an awkward conversation to have with others because frankly it’s an embarrassing condition, but I want to ask and make sure that the mats are being cleaned regularly and make sure that if someone at the gym who may have the issue are educated (i.e., how long is it contagious, how is it transmitted, etc.) and aren’t inadvertently spreading it to others. With regards to my situation, I started to treat it immediately, but it kept reoccurring. Because I am a member of the “Rat Race” and I have a 9 to 5 I have medical insurance and was able to visit my Dr. and get a prescription. Hopefully the prescribed med’s work better then the over the counter (OTC) topical junk.
Bottom Line; make sure that all your stuff is sanitized, cleaned and washed, and that you shower as soon as possible after any training session. You owe it to yourself and your training partners.
